In this Session we’ll take a look at some practices and techniques for playing off of a chord chart or lead sheet We’ll cover everything from simple tricks for players new to this experience to some pro tips for those who have been living in chart world for years. As we do this, we hope to go beyond the notes into a deeper understanding of song structure as well as how the keyboard fits into the ensemble.
Andy Ferris is a songwriter, producer, teacher, pastor, dad and friend. As the Music Director at Ada Bible Church in Grand Rapids, MI, Andy helps to plan and create church services, write and arrange music, and coach, rehearse and care for a team of amazing volunteers. Before his career in church ministry Andy studied to become a film composer earning a degree in Music Theory and Composition from Cornerstone University and he continues to do small jobs in orchestration and film scoring to this day. Over the years he has spent time touring with different bands playing everything from large arenas seating thousands down to smaller, smelly bars seating only a few local patrons. He has recorded with rock stars and taught music lessons to beginners. Along with his brilliant and beautiful wife and two adorable children, Andy lives on a small hobby farm in West Michigan.
