“A full appreciation of Dohnányi’s rich legacy requires an examination of the interrelationship between the multitudinous expressions of his musical activities as a pianist, composer, and conductor.” It is also Dohnányi’s pedagogical, administrative and patriotic roles that have helped shape Dohnányi’s story in the history of musical academia. Dohnányi is often described with the likeness of his contemporary counterparts – Rachmaninoff, Paderewski, Busoni, and Godowsky, yet, the life and works of Ernst von Dohnányi remain a mystery to modern instructors, performers and composers alike. Wildly acclaimed pianist, versatile composer, respected conductor, admired teacher, and devout citizen, Dohnányi is rarely recognized or performed on the modern stage. A comprehensive musician who contributed to almost every facet of the field lacks the recognition and a proper place among his peers. Dohnányi’s works, particularly Rhapsodies Op.11, allude to the artist’s capabilities behind the piano, the baton, and the manuscript. His extensive multi-faceted contributions to music are invaluable and well-deserving of his legacy and the celebration of Dohnányi as an indispensable artist.
