Sherry VanOveren began her piano studies with her parents at 5 years old. She went on to study privately with Elizabeth Anne Irish, then Marilyn Slenk, who was tremendously influential in Sherry's musicianship and piano technique, and continued her piano study at Calvin College with Ruth Rus. After her Sophomore year, Sherry won a scholarship to study for a year at the Mozarteum School of Music in Salzburg, Austria with pianist, Hans Leygraf . From there she went to Michigan State University to study with David Renner, Edith Kraft and artist in residence, Ralph Votapek.
Sherry has her Masters Degree in Piano Performance and Pedagogy, Bachelor's in Music Education from Michigan State University and General Education degree from Aquinas College. She has also earned the Musikgarten Achievement Award for all levels of training in the Musikgarten Music & Movement Series.
Sherry has been a piano instructor for Calvin College, Spring Arbor College, Lansing Community College and Michigan State University. She currently runs her own piano studio called "Piano In Action" which is the title of her own self-published piano instruction series for children. She teaches all levels, beginning through advanced, from ages 4 through senior citizens in her studio.
Sherry is a professional accompanist and also the organist and co-director of music with her husband, Edward, at Ada Congregational Church. She enjoys yoga, strength training, cooking, baking, reading and spending time with her family which includes four delightful grandchildren!
